Understanding Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rankings: What Each Belt Means

Curious about how Jiu-Jitsu belts work? From white to black belt, this guide breaks down what each rank means and what to expect on your journey. Whether you're training in Manistee, Kaleva, or Bear Lake, MCA is here to help you grow on and off the mat.

If you're new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), the belt system might seem a little mysterious at first. At Manistee Combat Academy, we help students of all ages progress at their own pace—but it’s helpful to understand what each belt represents.

In this guide, we’ll break down the BJJ belt rankings, what each level means, and what you can expect on your journey from white belt to black belt.

🔰 White Belt – The Beginning

Everyone starts here. As a white belt, you’re learning the fundamentals: posture, escapes, positioning, and how to survive. It’s the foundation phase, where consistency and humility matter more than results.

🧠 Focus on learning, not winning.

🟦 Blue Belt – The Technician Emerges

By the time you earn your blue belt (typically 1–2 years of consistent training), you’ve built a solid foundation. You understand positions, can roll with control, and start developing your own style.

💪 This is where most people begin to feel “dangerous” on the mat.

🟣 Purple Belt – Creativity & Flow

Purple belt is when your game becomes fluid. You can transition smoothly, anticipate your opponent’s moves, and chain submissions. This is often where advanced strategy and personal expression shine.

🎨 Think of this belt as the "artist" stage in Jiu-Jitsu.

🟤 Brown Belt – Master of the Details

A brown belt is a black belt in the making. You’re refining timing, pressure, and precision. At this level, students often help teach lower belts and act as leaders on the mat.

🧩 The difference is in the details.

⚫ Black Belt – Mastery & Responsibility

A black belt isn’t just about knowing moves—it’s about understanding why they work. Black belts are lifelong students and often mentors. Earning this belt can take 8–12 years or more, and marks true mastery of Jiu-Jitsu.

🔥 The journey doesn't end here—it evolves.

🧒 Kids Belt System

Kids follow a different belt progression (white, grey, yellow, orange, and green) before transitioning into the adult ranking system around age 16. Our youth Jiu-Jitsu program at MCA builds confidence, respect, and skill at every level.

Train at Your Own Pace at Manistee Combat Academy

Whether you’re just starting out or returning to the mats, we welcome all levels. Our structured programs, experienced instructors, and community vibe make MCA the top choice for Jiu-Jitsu in Manistee, Kaleva, and beyond.

5 Reasons Teens Benefit from Martial Arts Training During Summer

For teens, summer break can feel like freedom—or stagnation. Here’s how martial arts gives them purpose, confidence, and community during the months that matter most.

Summer break in Northern Michigan offers a much-needed reset—but it can also bring long stretches of boredom, too much screen time, and a loss of structure. For teens, this lack of direction can take a toll on their confidence, health, and mindset.

Martial arts—like Jiu-Jitsu and Boxing—offer something different. They're not just sports; they're tools for personal growth. At Manistee Combat Academy, we’ve seen firsthand how training over the summer helps teens build momentum that lasts long after break ends.

Here’s why:

1. It Gives Structure Without Feeling Like School

Teens thrive with a routine—even if they won’t admit it. Training a few times a week gives them something consistent to focus on. It helps maintain discipline and time management during a season when everything else is flexible.

2. It Builds Real Confidence

There’s a huge difference between performative confidence and the kind that comes from learning something hard, sticking with it, and making progress. Martial arts training gives teens daily proof that they can handle discomfort and keep improving.

3. It’s a Positive Outlet for Stress and Energy

Whether it’s frustration, anxiety, or just restless energy, teens need a safe place to let it out. Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu provide that outlet in a controlled, supportive environment—no screens, no drama, no judgment.

4. It Encourages Healthy Social Connection

Not every teen fits into traditional team sports or school cliques. Martial arts offer an alternative—where effort matters more than popularity, and everyone starts at zero. It’s a place to connect with peers who are focused on growth, not perfection.

5. It Teaches Skills That Carry Into the School Year

Focus. Patience. Resilience. Respect. These aren’t just martial arts principles—they’re life skills. Students who train through summer often return to school with more self-assurance and emotional control, ready to handle challenges without shutting down.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to force your teen to “stay busy” this summer. Sometimes, just giving them the right environment is enough. Whether they stick with it long-term or just try it out, a few months on the mat can create a lasting impact.

If you’re in the Manistee area and exploring healthy, meaningful summer options for your teen, martial arts might be a great fit.

Why Jiu-Jitsu is the Ultimate Discipline for Kids

In a world filled with distractions and screen time, Jiu-Jitsu offers something real. At Manistee Combat Academy, we’ve seen firsthand how this martial art helps kids grow not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too.

In a world filled with distractions and screen time, Jiu-Jitsu offers something real. At Manistee Combat Academy, we’ve seen firsthand how this martial art helps kids grow not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too.

💪 Confidence Through Challenge

Jiu-Jitsu teaches kids how to face challenges head-on. Whether it’s learning a new move or rolling with a partner, every class builds real confidence — not the kind handed out with participation trophies, but the kind earned through effort and growth.

🤝 Respect, Focus, and Discipline

Our coaches put a strong emphasis on respect — for instructors, teammates, and oneself. Kids quickly learn the importance of listening, following direction, and staying focused. These values carry over into school, friendships, and home life.

🛡️ Real-World Self-Defense

Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense. It empowers kids to stay calm under pressure, escape dangerous situations, and protect themselves without needing to punch or kick.

🧠 Problem-Solving on the Mat

Jiu-Jitsu is often called "human chess" for a reason. Kids learn to think a few steps ahead, adapt quickly, and use leverage and technique instead of strength — skills that apply far beyond the gym.

What to Expect at Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class

Thinking about trying Jiu-Jitsu, but not sure what to expect? We’ve got you. At Manistee Combat Academy, we make sure everyone — from total beginners to experienced grapplers — feels welcome and ready from day one.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what your first class will look like:

Thinking about trying Jiu-Jitsu, but not sure what to expect? We’ve got you. At Manistee Combat Academy, we make sure everyone — from total beginners to experienced grapplers — feels welcome and ready from day one.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what your first class will look like:

👕 What to Wear

If you don’t have a gi (yet), no problem. Just wear athletic clothes — shorts and a fitted shirt (no zippers or pockets). If you're trying no-gi, rash guards and board shorts are perfect. Bring flip-flops for walking on and off the mats.

🧼 How Class Starts

We start every session with a quick warm-up: think light stretching, basic movements, and some technique drills. After that, you’ll be shown the technique of the day — demonstrated by the instructor and broken down step by step.

🧠 Learning, Not Sparring

You won’t be thrown into live sparring (a.k.a. “rolling”) on day one unless you’re ready. Most new students spend time drilling with a partner and getting comfortable with the basics.

🤝 Respect is Everything

On the mat, we bow in and show respect to each other and the art. It’s a supportive, ego-free environment — perfect for learning at your own pace.

💬 Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

Got questions? Ask. Struggling with a move? We’ll help. Every black belt started where you are now.

🔥 Ready to give it a shot?
You’re invited to try a class for free. Just show up, bring a good attitude, and we’ll handle the rest. Check out the schedule →
